I have a few friends thinking about leaving The City and moving back to the west coast. They asked me to take detailed notes on my quality of life and how I am dealing. So I’m just going to put down what I’ve noticed so far, in one handy list. Mostly it’s about how awesome SoCal is.
Things that are great…
Garbage disposals! It was so annoying pouring soup or cereal into a Hefty bag.
Legit Mexican food—burritos are tightly wrapped; no tofu substitutions, BBQ sauce, or toothpicks to hold it all together.
Strawberries are $2.99 vs. $7.99
Martinis are $10 vs. $17
Giant grocery stores, wide aisles, and selection
Better looking guys for sure
Being near family and childhood/college friends
Going to a job interview and not having to haul my heels, umbrella, iPod, book, portfolio, etc. in a bag
Things that are weird…
Stores are so big, it takes like an hour just to find smoked mozzarella
doing errands without my iPod—no soundtrack!
driving from the bank to the grocery store in the same complex
tsunami evacuation route signs
actually using a crosswalk button when I go running
not drinking like a fish ‘cause I have to drive
wildlife: scorpions, lizards, black widows, etc.
Things that are sad (daily bummers)…
Being far from my friends
Being far from my ballet school (I miss the live pianists and hardcore, non-injured Romanian teachers who actually use the French terms and dance full out, e.g. they demonstrate quadruple pirouettes at age 48)
Things that are sad (non-daily bummers)…
Being far from Broadway
Being far from Europe
