Yesterday, I went to the Aveda “Ecotique” (whatever that means) near my house, and the stylist told me she shampoos her hair just twice a week. Dude, only my grandma washes less often than that.
The stylist’s hair was gorgeous. Thing is, what happens if you work out? She gave me this wonderful blowdry last night, and then this morning I ruined it by going to ballet. She said, “Can you just not sweat for the next three days?” But I have been trying to adhere to the Rule of Matthew McConaughey and break a sweat every day. Or every weekday. But who’s counting.
Anyway, how often is everyone else washing their hair?

I also wash my hair only 2X a week and work out every other day. I put my hair up in a bun during my workpout (not the sexiest), I have very long hair, and when i’m done with my workout i put my bun down and rub some dry shampoo (various brands out there- Fekkai, Ojon, Oscar Blandi, etc) on the roots only and that’s it! I get compliments on my hair about once a week, and people laugh when I say the trick is not to wash your hair often.
btw, i do not put my hair in a ponytail cuz that leaves the indentation on the hair. i twist high up and secure the bun with a hair clip (i usually need 2).
When my hair was long, I would go two days between washes and it was great! So much healthier. But now I’m wearing it right above my shoulders with short layers around my face, so I find that I touch it more and usually have to wash it every day. I try to skip a day when I can and put it in a messy bun or a headband or something. Long hair eventually drives me crazy (hence the routine shorter cuts), but it’s easier to manage in a lot of ways. Take care of those tresses!
At the most I wash my hair every other day. I will try onlydeb’s tip to use a hair clip instead of a hair band.
I wash mine about four days a week….but after I work out, I absolutely must wash it…
When I was in high school however, my hair was down to my ass long (now it hovers around my shoulders…right now, its below my shoulders), I could wash it once a week and it was beautiful….I even played volleyball and softball and worked up a major sweat and it still looked great all the time…..I guess hair changes over time!
I am here to make you feel better, Erin! I sweat every day & I wash my hair every day. Sorry, but I feel disgusting if I don’t . . . & my hair doesn’t suck (IMO), so I vote for clean hair!
@onlydeb, you may be a genius! Also: I need hairclips. @Melissa, I feel pretty disgusting, but…my hair is so dry and brittle!
Well…
I have super curly hair! So I condition (as in get my hair wet in the shower, skip the shampoo and go straight to the conditioner) everyday! However, I only use shampoo about once a week
This has been my secret to great hair (or fewer bad hair days) for the last few years!
TIGI dirty secret dry shampoo. i’m a stylist and i workout. its amazing.
I usually wash every day too, unless I don’t have plans that night and I washed it after my workout the day before. I use the Renee Fuerterer dry shampoo and love it, but my fair is really fine and straight. If I worked out and I’m going out later, it will def be washed – I usually work out 5 days a week, so most days I’m using the shampoo. My hair is just going to limp and vaguely greasy otherwise. I deep condition it every couple weeks, and use the Kerastase stuff on my ends when it’s wet. I just had my hair colored and she thought it felt pretty healthy, so I’m not worried. Plus I get compliments on my hair regularly, so I think it must be working out okay with my system!
Meanley, I’ve only been washing my hair every other day lately, sometimes every third day- and going to the gym about three times a week. The first day my hair is super poofy. The second day it looks decent. The third day it’s in a pony tail or a bun. I’ve heard the dry shampoo called Pssst… is good. Not sure where to get it though. I do resort to rubbing baby powder in my hair if I’m feeling greasy. Just don’t stop showering, that’s all I ask.
Just came across this article after reading your post earlier tonight…make sure to read through for the caveat for peeps with straight, fine hair though!

argh. I have thick, frizzy, coarse hair. it feels like i’ve tried every product on the planet but my hair still looks the same. recently i came across this post by aarti from foodnetwork. lol. http://www.aartipaarti.com/2010/09/09/da-hair/ apparently the key is to not shampoo all the time. haven’t tried it yet but lets see how it turns out. my hair is so unruly that i always end up pulling it back in a ponytail. soo boring.
I only shampoo 2-3 times a week, and I am also a huge fan of dry shampoo. I used to have to wash every day, or I would have an oil slick going on. It took some time, but my scalp adjusted. I save so much time in the morning now!
So, Erin, inquiring minds want to know…what kind of cut did you get?!
hey erin,
I am a guy and from planet earth- we clean our hair everyday herre… Just kidding, just wanted to say sup, your blogs ain’t half bad- just a bit anti-male!!!!!!
Hey Erin,
I wash every morning. Seriously, I’m so jealous of all you lucky ladies that can get away with skipping a day or two. My hair is fine and thin and I get oily skin so my hair gets too greasy by the next morning. The only time I skip is after I get it colored, when I’ll just rinse it the next day in the shower. My hairstylist has the same type of hair as me and we’ve discussed skipping shampoo every other day but she agrees that with our hair type, its just not possible.
Hair Removal with Shaving
Shaving is the most temporary method of hair removal because it merely cuts the hair off at the skin surface. Shaving does not make the hair shaft thicker, darker, or grow faster or slower. However, the short hair shaft may be more noticeable as it grows out because it has a blunt tip instead of the normal tapered tip. Shaving should be done after applying some type of moisturizer to the skin to help the razor glide over the skin, not cut or scrape it. Common moisturizers include water, shaving cream, hair conditioner, or body wash.
every other day. it gets too greasy and limp after that. and the pollution here is baaad.
